Wrong Free Space in Windows Expl

I have an annoying problem that is afflicting both my C
drive and an external hard drive. The Free Space reported
by Windows Explorer is incorrect. When I do a CTRL A on
the contents of either drive, "Properties" reveals a
significantly lower amount of used disk space eg on the
55gig C drive, only 40gig is used, but Windows Explorer
is reporting only 5gig free. On the external drive, there
is a 40gig difference. I do a lot of video editing, and
therefore create, and then delete, large AVIs. After I
delete a multi-gig AVI, the fee space didn't change.

My Recycle bins are only 4gig.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi

From a C:\ command prompt type the following

dir /a/s

Does the amount of free space differ from that shown in WE?

Willy,
The free space is the same as indicated by Win Explorer.
But the drive is 120gig, and the dir /a /s gives "total
files listed" as only 72gig, with 3.5gig free. I noticed
that in the dir display, every folder on the drive has
two subfolders named "." and "..". These don't show up in
Windows Explorer, or the ntbackup file list.
Any ideas?

Hi

I don't know what the "." folders are. Have you had a look in them from a
command prompt to see what they contain?

Wiily, I forgot to mention that I moved an 8gig folder
from my external drive to the C drive, and while the C
drive inceased in used size, no space was freed up on the
external drive. The reported free space stayed the same,
as if the folder had never been moved.

One (.) represents that directory and the other (..) represents the
directory it is a sub-directory of.

Yes, that was my fault. The lost disk space won't be in those. You'll lose
some space for the format (perhaps about 8 GBs) - does that mean that you
have lost about 36 GBs? Try a Disk Defragmentation - to see if that makes
any difference.

Willy,
Windows Explorer reports 116.4gb used, 3.6gb free, but
the properties of all the contents of the drive total
67.6gb (ie CTRL A then right click porperties.

I'll try to defrag the drive tonite. With only 3.6gb
free, it'll take some time! Note that I moved an 8gb
folder off the drive, but it didn't report any increase
in free space. Norton Speed Disk reports 97.8% fragmented.

Hi

If you really do only have 3.6 GBs left, then Defrag 'shouldn't' run - it
needs at least 15% free space to work properly.

SequoiaView is an excellent free (and clean) utility to track down
mysterious missing drive space.

It provides a one window graphical representation of which files are taking
up how much space where on a drive, often tracking down files that Windows
is reluctant to reveal.

Most of the time it will reveal at a glance where the missing space has gone
when repeated searching has failed to do so.

http://www.win.tue.nl/sequoiaview/

(I should add that it's fun too) :-)

These . and .. entries are standard. They aren't subfolders. The
single dot refers to the current folder, and the double dot to
the parent folder.

There are probably two or three factors at work here:

1. All hard drive manufacturers define 1GB as 1,000,000,000
bytes, while the rest of the computer world, including Windows,
defines it as 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. So a 55
billion byte drive is actually a little over 51GB.

2. Space is allocated on drives in units called clusters. The
size of the cluster varies with the file system used, and
sometimes also with the size of the partition. If your drive is
NTFS, you probably have 4K clusters.

That means that any file between 1 and 4096 bytes uses one
cluster (4096 bytes), every file between 4097 and 8192 bytes uses
two clusters, and so on. On the average, you waste about half a
cluster for each file. If you have a lot of files on the drive,
this wasted space, called slack, can add up to quite a bit.

3. You may not be looking at hidden files, such as the page file,
hibernation file, etc.

On the external drive, there
is a 40gig difference.

That's a much bigger difference and may not be attributable to
the factors above. How large is the drive?
