Hi,

Checking my Windows XP version number I see this message displayed in
the about window:

"Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 : Service Pack 4)"

When I try to install XP SP2 RC1 it will fail with a message stating
that my windows version is newer than the one I'm trying to install.
How can this be possible? I regularly upgrade my system via Windows
Update and I can see several hotfixes installed. Is it possible to
manually reset the service pack number back to "1" where it's supossed
to be?

TIA

High!

My OS is screwed, and I want to install beta Service Pack on top of it.
Can you help me screw up my OS some more?

Hai!

Why sure!!!

Remove all critical security updates, un-install or disable any
firewall, anti-virus and anti-spyware software you may have, download
and install all the free software you can find on the internet and visit
all the porn sites you can find - that is if you can stay online long
enough to find any.

There are certainly more things you could do but this should suffice.

First draft included warez/crack sites but I realized you'd probably
never make it more than a minute or two before getting that cute little
60 second countdown thingy, so I deemed it superfluous. Hadn't thought
about the funny red switch, though, but make sure you move it while the
PC is running, ok?

:)

Ohh my God, you're so clever!! should be on the Nobel Prize waiting
list!

I see your comments tend to be a little bit acid but nothing helpful.

Anyway, the case I just reported is happening in a PC we use to
(wonder why, kurttrail?) test service packs and the like. The PC is
working perfectly till now.

I will appreciate any real "intelligent" comment on this situation.

Thank You

Must have been a flashback, cuz I haven't dropped a hit in over a decade.
Now if you want to talk 'shrooms, I'm there! ;-)

ROFL! Now that makes this thread even effin' funnier!

The OS *seemed* to be working properly till now. If it's a test machine,
format and reinstall your your base backup image. That probably take you
less time than playing games with me.

You do have a backup of your OS partition for your testing PC? said:
