I bought a used laptop with XP Pro installed. When I try
to run scandisk or regedit I get a message saying earlier
versions replaced the originals to insert srp disk 1. Not
having the original install disk I bought the full
version XP Pro (not the upgrade). It won't work because
of conflicting serial numbers. How do I install it (or at
least the wrong version parts) without having to back up
8 gig of data to floppies? Please email any solutions
direct to me as I'm not sure I'll ever finf my way back
here. Thank you.

If you truly can't upgrade because of serial number mismatch, and
can't avoid doing a clean reformat and install (which IMHO is a better
choice anyway), you will need to back up your data thru the network to
somebodies computer or server with 8G free space (which is not so huge
an amount these days). Or borrow a USB CD writer, and get a dozen or
so blank CDs as a second choice.

"Please email any solutions direct to me" is a bad idea for several
reasons:
1) You have now posted your email address in plain text on the
Usenet, which is read by thousands of people, and hundreds of
automated address mining agents. You may not be able to find any
responses in your mailbox cause of all the spam and viruses that are
probably hitting you right now.
2) The reasons why these discussion groups are so popular is that
they can be read by those hundreds of people, many of which may also
benefit from the answers posted here. Asking for the answers to be
emailed to YOU reduces the likelihood of any exchange of ideas, which
is the benefit of the forum concept.
3) If you are too busy to look here for answers, why do you think
folks with the answers have the time to look here for your questions?

I hate spam - PLEASE get rid of the spam before emailing me!
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
