XP made it possible to send files to a CD-ROM. Does Vista provide similar
functionality for DVD-ROMs?

Yes, there's a DVD maker program included with Vista Home premium and
Ultimate version which let you do some basic DVD burning.

The same functionality is in Vista, you can drag and drop files to your
DVD-R's and DVD-RW's, as well as CD-R's and CD-RW's using the windows
explorer, and hit burn to disk on the toolbar.
if your looking to create actual DVD movies to play in your DVD player,
canix answered this.
Media player also has this burn function, to burn music cd's or burn mp3 WMA
files to any blank CD or DVD

The greedy bastards at Microsoft decided users of the business version
of Vista which costs $40 more to upgrade to compared to Home Premium
and is the recommended upgrade path from XP Pro, don't need this
feature so you can't burn DVD's directly from Vista Business. So go
buy some extra software that provides this feature like Nero or Easy
CD and spend $80 or more extra.

If you "upgrade" to the business version you also lose out on the
new media center which is probably one of the better new feature in
Vista. I guess Microsoft marketing a-holes think if you run a
business, or go that upgrade path you're not suppose to need to burn a
DVD or take a break and maybe watch TV or other things using media
center. Maybe there's something in the water in Redmond Washington
that causes Microsoft employees to keep making stupid marketing
decisions.

ummm... most burners come with free software anyways, usually nero express.
last i checked, nero express 6.6 works fine under Vista, even though it's
not supposed to.

and WTF are you complaining about no having media centre in Vista business?
was media centre available in all versions of XP? duh!
Besides, it wasn't even available retail wise, you had to get it
pre-installed. now you can get it retail via Ultimate.
Which ultimate's media player has built in DVD viewing capability without
the need for a codec, or powerdvd or other. something also not available on
XP,
so get your head out of the sand moron, and stop using Linux, before your
brain explodes. (err whats left of it)
