Is there a way to write a backup to a CD drive without going through the GUI
software steps to make a disk accessible? without doing so, I get "invalid
drive" or "incorrect function".

Thanks in advance.

Nero includes NeroCmd to write images from the command line. You sound like
you want packet writing software which allows you to write to the CD/DVD
just as if it were any other type of disk. Nero includes inCD and Roxio
includes Drag to Disc or ??? on older versions (I forget what it's called,
DirectCD perhaps?). There's also DLA from Sonic who recently bought Roxio.

There are WSH scripts to write files using the built-in support for CD
writing. Do a Google search for more information on that. Never used that
method myself.

Or this one (note cdburn.exe):

Though it is limitetd to burn ISO images, it can't create them.
