writing onto DVD

Hi!

I would like to kindly ask for some help with the following:

I have been trying to copy some video files (Quick Time MOV) onto a DVD from
my PC (Windows XP), in order to use them on a MAC. However, my MAC is not
recognising the DVD at all (I have checked and it does not seem to have
anything to do with media compatibility). It is also strange because, some
time ago, when I inserted a blank DVD into my PC, a window would
automatically pop up with some optional actions which included "copy files".
Now, nothing happens and I have to go to My Computer and then copy the files
which go straight to the DVD, instead of going first to that "Files Ready to
write" window. In order to burn, I need to physically eject the DVD, which
seems to set off the writing process before the DVD is ejected. Furthermore,
before I can copy any files, I am now being asked to format the DVD, which
never happened before. I am thinking that this formatting might be the cause
of my MAC ignoring the DVD afterwards. Any thoughts?

You don't say which software you are using to write to your DVD, but it
sounds like you are using "packet writing", which is the system used by
software like Roxio's Drag-to-Disc and Nero's INCD. You need to check
your software and use it in the "normal" way (i.e. not packet writing).
If you are doing your copying by COPY/PASTE or by dragging, then you
probably are using packet writing.
