writing avi file to dvd

have a movie on hard drive in avi format.
used vlc to convert to mpeg1 format.
have nero 6.xx updated to latest available from nero.
nero does not accept the mpeg1 file but does accept the avi.
does it convert it to mpeg while writing.
the intent is to watch it on tv from a normal dvd player.

Run the file thru WM encoder 9 series (convert audio/video),once thru,
send to dvd.Download from WMP home page,scroll to encoder..
