writind data to rw dvd's

I just installed a dvd writer from NEC on a PC under WinXP and want to
move on dvd's some data to keep there a year or two just in case. I did
this easily with CD-RW's through just XP, but things with dvd's look
different. Do I need any additional soft? Anything free?

You will need DVD-writing software. If it didn't come with your burner, you
can try DeepBurner or burnatonce.
