how do i copy my family tree file to a cd without it
being write protected so my sister can take a copy with
her i am using xp home edition and roxio easy cd creator
platinum and i believe there is some kind of conflict
with them any help much appreciated

If you are using a CD-R, then everything will be write protected. What you
are doing is using a laser to darken an area of the CD - this is something
that can't be undone. A CD-R is always read only. A CD-RW will allow you to
wipe and re-write it, but it still doesn't work in the same way as a floppy
disk or your hard drive. If you need to be able to make dynamic changes,
then you'll want to use magnetic media (floppy disks, Iomega disks) rather
than optical media.

Chris is correct. However, just because it is READ ONLY when you get it on
the CD doesn't mean your sister could not take it home, copy it from the CD
to her hard drive, right-click on it and make sure "Read Only" is not
checked, edit what she needs to edit and then Burn it to another CD for you
to use. If you use a CD-RW, you won't waste the dime everytime, because you
can just erase the CD-RW and swap it when you need to.
