After installing a new floppy disk drive (which hardware
manager etc claims to be ok), my computer claims that all
disks I put in are write-protected, which I know not to be
the case. Neither will it write data to CDs (though it
will copy audio CDs.) Any idea what the problem might be?

cheers

I have the same problem with my CD-RW, I've been searching for an answer for
ages.
I'm running XP Pro.
After first installing all was fine. I installed WinOn CD and Direct CD and
found later I couldn't packet write.
I formatted a new disk and all was fine again but later the system reverted
back to not letting me packet write.
I assume somethings changed in the registry but where?
If I find any info in a knowledge base etc. I will let u know.
