I have scoured the internet looking for a way to write data DVDs using the
identical CD approach built into XP (select files in explorer, click write to
CD, then follow the pop up to complete the write). Does anyone know anything
on this?

I don't believe it can be done--but will watch for others' responses. To
write to a DVD with Windows XP, you need software to be added, something
like Nero or Roxio, although most PCs with DVD drives (or add-on purchased
DVD drives that you install into your PC) will include software with the
hardware purchase that lets you write to the DVDs.

XP writing tools came out before DVD media started to appear. XP can
only write to DVD-RAM media "natively." To use any other DVD media,
you must use other software, like the ones previously mentioned, for
now (not sure about SP2?)

Looks like we concur. Though MS should add this in. DVD are as popular (or
nearly) as CDs. Seems like a pretty easy update.

thanks for the input

Should and would are two different things. MS wants everyone to move
to Vista so I do not think DVD writing will ever be "installed" into
XP by MS.
