For centering col headers,
try also the "Center Across Selection" option
under Horizontal (Text alignment)
(achieves the same visual w/o using merged cells)
Merge cells may cause downstream problems,
so its best to avoid this
Thank you for your response. This has worked well however the text I am
inserting always types from the bottom - I would like to be able to type the
text from the top as I will not always fill each section completely within
the merge cells and typing from the bottom will leave blank lines at the top
of my response.

I'd just like to add my two cents on this....Actually, it doesn't achieve
exactly the same visual if the text is long. I had the same issue, but when
I chose "center across selection" it "centered" each line rather than
"justifying" the whole cell. I had to choose "justify" with "merge cells"
checked.
