I am looking for a free program that can read .wps files, they were created
with MS Works.

StarOffice 5.2 says it opens wps Dos Works 2.0, Win Works 3.0, Mac Works
4.0, if that helps

Tried StarOffice 5.2 and it won't open the files, all I got was a screen of
gibberish.

Open Office works for me

I just tried Open Office 1.0 and it wouldn't open a wps file. Are you
using the newer version? Also, even though it's OT, I thought I would
mention ABC Amber Text Converter. It's shareware but you can install
and uninstall it to use as you need. You can find it here
http://www.thebeatlesforever.com/processtext/abctxt.html. I only rarely
need it when one of my students sends an assignment to me as a wps
file. Sometimes I return it and make them save it as a txt or rtf file
but since I found ABC Amber Text Converter I usually just use it to
convert one file format to another (if necessary). It's a clever
program, almost good enough to pay for. Sorry for being OT but it is a
solution to the wps problem.

Well it would appear that ABC Amber Text Converter does NOT support the
latest Works WPS formats. According to the web site, it imports WPS (Works
4.0 for Windows, Works 2000, Works for Windows 3.0). What about Works
versions 6 or 7?

Given the price for this conversion program, you might be better off just
buying Works. It is often heavily discounted. Even though it is a MS
product, Works is not that bad. IMHO, it is a lot easier to use for newbies
than MS Office.

I'm using version 1.1 and it works fine opening .wps files created in
Office 2000, Office XP and Works 4.5. I also use it to open word docs
with no problem.

If anything Open Office opens them twice as fast, and takes less time
to load.
