well im sad to say but my old Compaq 5330us is getting very hot i dont know what it is thats making it hot it got up to 62c idle kinda weird. I was thinking it might be too crowded and bad air flow heres my set up and i will include a picture for some additional research thank you. specs below

Model - Compaq 5330us
Mobo - Compaq.....
Cpu - P4 1.7ghz
PS - 235 wattsi think?.?.
Ram - 512 133mhz sdram
Audio - SB audigy 2zs (game edition) <--- gonna move to new comp next weekend
Video - ati radeon 9200 4x/8x agp zapped the one that came with it gforce 2
net - some modem on the bottom of all the pci slots which are all full but 1 vid card is blocking it.!.!.

let me know if i missed something but it has had know issues for having the heat sink and cpu fan clogg and make the 3d card glitch and freeze while playing any 3d games. know issues on other forums on my model. but let me know what it could be im guessing bad air flow but temp in case is steady 35c so maybe a new heatsink and fan required?? but will it work for a compaq mobo?? let me know what you think could be the problem.

Without having it in front of me these are only guesses. The case is very similar to my older Compaq Celeron633, not much room inside. You're running a lot of things off that small power supply. Can you move the sound card down a bit, you seem to have the two hottest cards (video and sound) together. You could replace the heat sink and fan although I'm not familiar with the newer Compaqs I had no problems replacing mine. If you don't already have one then maybe a fan on the front blowing cool air in, again it's a Compaq so I don't know if there's somewhere to put it. Hopefully someone else will come up with more ideas too.

Scrap it and buy a decent PC ... ;-)

People forget ... despite the 'invention' of Graphic Processing Units and Sound Card PU, nearly everything still runs through the CPU.

With ComCrap, HewletCrapard and Crapard Bell you get one thing in common, apart from crap, they only ever give you just enough motherboard/CPU to turn on the system. That was just a note to any other reader … and is based on practical experience in working on the said PCs. I now refuse to work on any ComCrap.

I would, however, replace the HSF ... take out the SoundBlaster, onboard is good enough, and don't use PCI slot 1 (the one nearest the AGP slot) if possible.

In my opinion adding 'extra cooling', in the way of more case fans, is just a waist of time ... all you need to get the heat out is one exhaust fan, it will do. You will never have a system cooler than the ambient temp' but you will find it quite common for the 'ideal' temp to be 15/25deg over ambient. The onboard sensor is never accurate; treat it as a guide.

One consolation ... a P4 has very good thermal resistance; it should not 'burn-out' but does display some weird 'problems' if not corrected.

Oh, and I would really be looking at replacing their PSU

that pretty much tells it all.
o and you "wat the?" thats called the northbridge chipset :D

Yep, the "what the" is a NorthBridge and no it don't need a fan.

I just had another look at your pics ... and I would strongly recomend you take that SB out NOW ... boy is that in the wrong slot AND very close to the graphics card.

Hmm... didnt see that, take it out!
acutally some time the Northbridge requires a fan as it get pretty hot!

alright i didnt think the sb would get damaged from the heat of the graphic card but when i think about it it just might. right well i got my new procc this morning and cool glowing mouse pad lol and frind should be getting the rest of my parts intoday also. but it will be off all day today and tonight when i get off work i will remove it and put it into and static bag thanks for the help and how about like a 120mm fan would it be better sutted for a exhaust fan?? temps are core 40c AND INSIDE 31C :-x but like you have said not very accurate so THANK YOU ALL!

I'll strongly disagree about the NB 'needing' a fan ... why is there no heatseek (sic) on the Southbridge, it gets hot too.

Motherboard manufacturers are a fool unto themselves sometimes, especially those that fit a Fan to the Northbridge ... have a closer look at what that fan is connected to ... usually some pathetic plastic looking thin sheet of something, come on, I mean if you "need" to dissipate the heat off the NB at least fit a decent HS

There are around 10 good "hotspots" on a motherboard, don't see no HS fitted to them and the heat is just as 'hot' as the NB.

We don't harf get "suck-in" on the ergonomics of some manufacturers MBs and expect to see the same on other MBs

:D

Hi

Just as a matter of interest, how do you tell how hot a PC is running? What do you do to check? I confess Mucks, I have one of the makes listed in your 'crap' list!

I know, but ... Anything I don't build myself is ... crap. :D

Everest will give you that information ... just look under 'Computer sub-section Sensor' ... :thumb:

Dear Mucks

Where is 'Everest' and 'computer' subsection 'sensor'? On this site or elsewhere? I quite fancy seeing how hot mine runs now!! My hard drive is in a built in cupboard amd sometimes when you open the door it does seem quite warm.

You have all got me thinking now.

Kind regards

well actually i have a program called MBM 5 which tells me on the top with the icons pretty handy and i have it freshing every 1 sec soooo i hope its accurate and i dont think my pc has and thermal paste :-P

I Found speedfan to be quite good, its small and intrusive, Sits in the system tray and tells you the speeds of your fans, temps of your cpu, case, graphics card and hard drives. (If they have sensors) also can tell you if your hard drives are fit. Get it from here if you wish. :)

Dear Mucks

I'll have a look at that site and see what it says. I know that you must think I am a total air head but I'm not really!!! I will be going into hospital in a few months and will then be off work for quite a while and in that time I am planning to really get to grips with computers. My goal is to be able to build my own so I need to find a resource somehwre or other to help me in my quest. Believe it or not, about 5 years ago I wasn't even sure how to turn one on. I went to college and did all my RSA exams and now could work in admin/PA or whatever.

I will let you know how hot my PC is when I check it out!

Many thanks
