Would system restore eliminate a virus

Just a thought.
Suppose my W-XP machine got a virus today. If I ran System Restore using say
yesterday's restore point, would that:

1) Eliminate the virus and/or

2) Eliminate the damage caused by a virus.

Depending on how smart the virus is.

Depending on how benign the virus is.

Do not count on it.

It depends on what sort of files the virus affects. It's not something that
you should count on, and while you're at it, it's not uncommon for viruses
to lurk in the system restore files.

No. SR is not an anti virus program and only monitors/restores certain file
types. Use your anti virus program for what it is intended for, to clean
infected files. SR is also not a backup program, it only restores the
"state" of a system.
