Would anyone happen to know where I can find a freeware for faxing? -it
seems my XP Fax Console has run amuck, it won't receive the relay signal
back from the receipients fax machine it seems to disconnect just as the
recipeint fax answers and starts to send back the relay signal. Can anyone
help with this one, or direct me to an update for it? Thanks for your time.

Check the software (CDs) that came with your printer or scanner/copier.
Most of them have their own FAX feature. If nothing, do a Google search,
for there are many freeware/shareware apps available.

I don't know that this is really a software problem. It may be that your
fax/modem is disconnecting to soon. There may be a wait before disconnect
option available. The receiving fax may have a setting for multiple rings
before answer, and your modems delay before disconnect may not be long
enough. Look under control panel Phone & Modem as well as printers and
faxes.

Another oddity I ran into. My fax is actually a Brother all in one 720CN. To
get windows fax to work, as opposed to just the Brother software, I ended up
first installing a standard 56kb external modem on com1. (No fax/modem is
really connected, although I do have one in a box somewhere.) Evidently
this allows windows faxing to install properly.
After all of this, a reinstall of the brother software from CD (not
download) works properly. It seems that they forgot something in the
download version. Connecting to the brother via the USB port may be another
hassle, haven't tried that.

Thank you for your response! I have checked the (limited as they are)
settings of my modem properites in Windows and also within the programming
software for my modem, within the modem software I increased the wait time
for response, however this is did not resolve the issue. What is happening
is that modem is disconnecting just after the receiving fax answers and
relays the signal back to my moden, -as though the other fax was telling my
modem to drop the line, but that wouldn't make any sense, so there has to
be some other reason for this.

Thanks again!

Elaine

Is the receiving fax any fax, or a particular model? There have been some
problems with fax modes (class) and some fax machines, usually at high
resolution settings. In the past, (pre XP) I've had to occasionally lock out
higher resolution modes on a few modems.
Seems that the extra modes and handshaking caused the receiving fax to time
out.
Have you setup the modem log and looked at the entries?
