Worth selling my old scanner?

A friend of mine got me a good deal on a Epson Perfection 3170 scanner.
It's for home use, and I bought it to scan some of my old 35mm negatives. I
couldn't really justify the high price of a quality stand-alone negative
scanner.

My question is, I own a Epson Perfection 1650 scanner which I'm very happy
with, but I wonder (for normal scanning use) if they are comparable in
scanning quality or is the 3170 a much better scanner (ignoring the
transparency capabilities of the 3170)?

Should I keep my 1650 or is the 3170 a better scanner anyway?

Steve.

So you already have bought and paid for both scanners, right? Unless you
can return the 3170, you might as well keep it and sell the 1650 because the
3170 seems more versatile. If you can return the 3170, do that and then
take the money and go buy a used dedicated film scanner like a Minolta Dual
Scan III or something similar. It shouldn't be much more and it will do a
better job with your 35mm (from your post, I am assuming you don't need to
scan MF). In regard to normal reflective flatbed scanning, the 1650 and
3170 will probably perform about the same.
