Worth an upgrade?

How much of a performance boost would I get from replacing my Geforce 3
Ti500 128mb with a 9600 128mb?

Just upgraded my PC, and only thing carried over from the old one was the
graphics card.

And how good is the video capture capabilities of the ATi cards? Obviously
it will vary from brand to brand, but generally are they good enough for
grabbing home videos?

TIA

Not VERY much.... bear in mind that the non-pro has 200 MHz memory; a lot
slower than the memory you have now. The Pro version might be an upgrade in
FSAA and such, though...

If i were you i'd check for a second hand 9700 or 9800 (non-SE)...

Thanks. I've sort of feel out of the loop a bit as I haven't bought any
computer mags for while, and don't really know how the various graphics
cards compare.

Thing is I would really like to get my old anologue camcorder tapes onto
disc, and I figured if the new cards do a good enough jab of caputuring
video then I would be as well off getting one,and upgrade in performance, as
getting a seperate card to the job

Check Tom's Hardware. There is a recent review of all video cards on the
market with benchmarks. I'm sure there is s comparison between your old
Geforce 3 and the ATI cards you are looking at. I went from a Geforce 3
classic to a 9800 non pro and was very pleased not only with the boost in
frame rates but with the fact that I could run everything at 4x AA and 8x AF
with no performance hit. As a bonus I discovered that my non pro card could
be overclocked to pro speeds and kept there, so I eventually flashed the
bios on my non pro turning it into a pro. Yes, I think anything from a 9600
pro on up would be a very nice upgrade. Make sure you get a card that will
do DX 9 in hardware because that's where the games are going now. Max Payne
2 looks great, as does FS2004 on my 9800 flashed pro.

The video capture is good enough for casual use, but the ATIs are not as
widely supported as the BT8X8 chips (support for those in video
applications is pretty much a given) or the newer mass-market Phillips
and Conexant chips. In an inexpensive board the Phillips chips seem to
be doing best right now. You're best results though are probably going
to come from an external Firewire capture device such as the Canopus
ADVC-100 (or if you're _not_ running XP the ADVC-50 or -1394--service
pack 1 broke the support for those and so far Canopus and Microsoft
don't seem to have been able to fix it) or a digital camcorder--make
sure you get one that passes the analog signal through to the Firewire
port--some of the ones at the low end don't.
TIA

A whole lot faster.... get at least a 9600xt - Heard Circut City has
rebats on it, reduces price to $150.

Depends on the CP, have something like an AMD64 - and you didn't
upgrade the video, you should be shot. If your "upgrade" was a
Celeron 2.6Ghz, then theres not much difference.

video cap what? Screen shot from a game? Dunno - same as any other.
