IBM DeathStar was a major problem back in the days of 15G to 40G hard
disks. No issue after that.

You should also avoid Seagate's 7200.11 series.

See the shocking pictures at

And it indeed trashed IBM's reputation for consumer disks (which had
previously been top notch for the first generation of its IDE disks
from Hungary).

In order to restore confidence, they went into partnership with Hitachi,
and then sold their consumer disk operation entirely to Hitachi.

It was the glass platters that were problematic. Lately I read news that
a Taiwanese company Hoya(?) was going to buy into glass platters again.

Hi,

I guess the brand I don't use, so I don't know. The one I had so much
problem it since my first one in early 80's and I stopped using it until
around 200x I gave it another try, and both the original and replacement
failed within 1-2 months on system rarely use. It was Maxtor and now sold
to Seagate, and I don't know if I can trust Seagate (with Maxtor drive).

Seagate, I don't know what the heck it;s doing but it seems like buying
other manufacture as little over 2 decades ago it bought Control Data Corp.
and Maxtor recently.
Thank You in Advance, John

And instead of going through the same routine all over, I would suggest
you to point your browser to web page like www.newegg.com and READ the END
USER feedbacks and go from there.

And as I said hard drive is so cheap these days to give so much headache
for nothing. Here, I bought (4) 1TB hard drives to replace some old 250GB
and 500GB internal hard drives, And I still stuck with (4) 500GB external
hard drives (2 smaller portable storages for my phorography now I use larger
memory cards instead)

No, the heads can clean one of those glass platters bare...
though personally I heard of the Deathstar problem early
enough on that I avoided buying any. For me the most
problematic was the first generation of Maxtor 7200 RPM
drives for desktop use. "Plus 8" might have been their
name, I can't recall now.

Well, it's amazing but I will have to believe. :-)
And yes, I heard about the Maxtors too. That is wy I never bought one
of them whilst I did buy IBM/Hitachi stuff later and to my
satisfaction.
