Hi,

We have a Windows 2000 system that seems to be working
well, except: systems on the network cannot login into the
system. We only get an invalid password when we try. If
I use the same username / password on the actual system, I
can get in no problem. The systems that I am using to TRY
to login are Windows 98. I can find the unit on the
network no problem, just cannot login. . .
I have checked:
1. User rights
2. Share properties and access rights
3. Removed networking and reinstalled it
4. I have TCP/IP (Static) and Netbeui
5. Deleted all the *.pwl files

Any ideas are welcome!
Thanks,
Denis

I assume you get a popup asking for the IPC$ password. If so:

If this is a P2P network, that's how it works. There is no "server" to
manage user accounts. The win2k computer needs to know the other
computers connecting to it. So it needs to know all network users. This
is accomplished by adding these users as accounts with identical
username/passord used to log into the win98 computers.

If you have a true server environment rather than P2P, then disregard my
above comments.

I have encountered EXACTLY this problem, ONLY with Win98
systems, since installing SP4 - removing SP4 fixed the
problem!

I don't think Microsoft know about this yet!
