Hi!
I'm buying a new computer. Since I'm interested in 3D graphics I
decided to make it a dual processor workstation. Now I have a problem;
I can't choose between Opteron and Xeon. I read many comparison
articles and the only result is that I'm now even more confused; some
say Opteron is better, some say it is overmached by Xeon. I know
Opteron has more instructions and better multitasking and Xeon has
more speed, but I still can't say which will render faster.
Please help. Especially if you are a user.

Than go for Xeons. Generally, the more way a computer is, Opterons are
better, yes. However, in 2-way configuration, things are pretty much the
same, and Xeons are much cheaper that way. You have absolutely great MBOs
for Xeon, eg. Supermicro X6DVL-G ~350$ or if you want to go for something
more, Supermicro X6DAL-XG for 100$ more... Both have PCI-X and support for
ECC RAM. OTOH, be advised that first worthy MBO for Opteron workstation is
Tyan S2885ANRF, and it has price as high as 600$.

If you want to go for a graphics workstation, get the Xeons. Intel
architectures and the 3D applications are optimised.

If you get more advanced, you might want to get a server stack and use a
network rendering protocol to do your generation.
