Works can read and write files in format that will enable you to share,
e.g. Word DOC and RTF.

Your notebook will have on it whatever it is you bought. You bought
Works. If you want Word, buy Word.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.

rms

The latest version of Works comes with Word, if you have
an older version when you save your files change the type
of file you want to save as. Works has always had that
functionality.

New versions of Works can save files in the .DOC format. Just go to Save As
and use the drop down box to save as .a Microsoft Word document

Also new versions of MS Works Suite come bundled with Word 2002. If the
manufacturer supplied you with disks for Works see if MS Word is on them. It
should be on Disk 1 if you have MS Works Suite 2003 or 2004.

Well, you never paid for Microsoft Word to begin with.
Windows XP is an "operating system" and does not include
Microsoft Word. Your computer manufacturer chose to
bundle only Microsoft Works with your PC.

You can save files with a selection of file formats...
txt, rtf, even doc using WORKS "save as" command.

You can save WORKS database and spreadsheets with similar
formats.

If you expected Windows XP to includes Word, sorry to tell you
that you're mistaken. Neither it, nor any other version of
Windows, has ever included Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, or
any significant other application software. Such programs have to
be bought, either by themselves or as part of Microsoft Office.

If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows,
came with Word, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled
Word as part of the package he sold you, not because that version
of Windows came with it.

Note, by the way, that Windows doesn't come with Works either.
Here again, it's that *your* vendor chose to bundle Works as part
of the package he sold you.

Who are you upset with? Microsoft? They have never supplied Word
with any version of Windows. The company you bought the computer
from? Did they tell you that what they were selling you came with
Word?

Sorry to be blunt about it, but if you mistakenly expect a
product to come with something that it doesn't, you haven't done
your homework. There's nobody to blame but yourself.

Any other suggestions?

Sure. There are lots of other word processors on the market, some
of which are cheaper than Word. Some are even free. Consider
getting WordPerfect, OpenOffice, or StarOffice.

Yes if you use Works to save as a .DOC file then someone with Word or even
with WordPad (virtually all Windows based PCs) will be able to open it.

Open Office is an open source (free) office suite that handles Microsoft
Office documents.

Expect a large download.

OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/product/ is a free alternative to the
Microsoft Office suite. While it is a large d/l of 50MB but well worth it.
There is no hidden spyware or nags with it. You can set it to open and save
as Microsoft documents

A .doc file can be opened with WORD. WORKS will not create
all the features that WORD does, but whatever you use for
formatting, text, images, clip art, will be seen by WORD.

If you create a WORD file and use all the advanced features
and safe it as a .doc, .wps (WORKS) or some other file
format and then try to open it in WORKS, not all can be
transferred into WORKS.

You can get converters for both WORKS and for WORD to allow
greater range of file formats to be opened.

If you double click on a file, it may open if it is
registered to the proper program. But a more sure way to
open cross=platform is to open the program and use the
"file/open" menu

FWIW, I prefer Works to Office, it does what I need done w/o the HUGE
amount of bloat. Don't give up on it until you try it. Of course you
can share files, just save your documents a a .doc file.

Hi, I am certainly no expert! ... and looking for other answers. However, Works does not work for me either. When I got "Word", then communicating with everyone else got much easier! Hope this helps... CC

WORKS works just fine, it is intended for home users ,ore so
than office tasks, but it will work for that too.

It uses a different method to code the files, a .wps
extension is the default. But in ALL word processors (and
spreadsheet/databases too) you can select a different file
format and extension with the drop-down menu and you can
change a previous file saved by use of the "file/save as"
menu.

WORKS can save word processor files in formats compatible
with WORD, WordPerfect, and plain text or rich text (rtf)
