Working on HUGE documents.

Is there ANYTHING I can do so my Dell Dimension 4100 with a P3 and som
mediocre amount of RAM is less sluggish when navigating through a 1000
page document? Like maybe getting our MIS guys to give my machine a
much RAM as it'll take? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I've always heard that MS Word "is not for long documents". Well
that's not okay. I'm stuck with paginating and adding references to th
humungoid document mentioned above. I have to do it, whether it is a
ordeal of torment or not

As former computer salesman, I advise to max
out on RAM--it's cheap and makes a huge
difference in performance. Better yet, make
a case for a new PC. Show Mgmt and MIS
what you're confronting with the large file.

If you're tracking changes, make a backup
copy of document and then Accept Changes
in original. I've been amazed at how document
file sizes drop in size once I accept all changes,
particulary if graphics, TOC, and indexes
are in document.

Just my two cents worth. Good luck.

G'Day,
You could try splitting the doc into
Master/Sub docs.

Word will work with large documents - thousands of pages - but on a slow
machine, the best plan is to work primarily in normal view with the
re-pagination switched off. This will stop the constant repagination that is
slowing you down, You will eventually have to repaginate, but at least your
work should be a little quicker.

Extra memory is cheap and you should be thinking in terms of at least
512mb - the more the merrier. The fastest hard drive you can get your hands
on will help. These together (memory especially) will produce more immediate
results than upgrading the processor. My ancient Athlon 700 desktop machine
with lots of memory is faster to work on than my memory starved P4 laptop,
even if the latter starts faster. Both are destined for upgrades soon - more
memory for the laptop, a P4 Shuttle box for the desktop :)

Word will do long documents (some professionals are smoothly producing
10,000 page documents) but it's easier the more you know about Word.
Specifically, for navigating, heading styles plus outline view can make it
very easy, see here:

Please note that WordForums.com is a very inefficient way to access these
newsgroups. It is not an independent, self-sufficient website, but simply
piggybacks onto public, international newsgroups. It mirrors the Microsoft
public news server, and mirrors it slowly at that. Your questions show up on
the server hours after you post them, and it seems the answers show up back
at the site late. The majority of the people who may respond to your
question are not using the site. See here for some suggestions on other ways
to access the newsgroups.
