working from different computers

I help a friend with his website. He lives 20 miles away.
I don't want to make the drive too often, so, if I update
his site from my machine, how do I prevent him undoing
what I have done, next time he publishes up his changes ?

How do we synchronise what we do so we don't undo each
others work ?

He would have to publish down to his machine or work directly on the live
site, which requires that the server have the FP extensions installed.
