how do I leave a workgroup. I cannot erase the name, only
rename it in the system settings

I assume it's mandatory to be a member of a workgroup as the settings dialog
box won't close unless you enter a name.
A workgroup will automatically disappear from the network listings when
there are no more logged in workgroup members and when the network feels
like getting round to it. Reboot, go away and make a cup of coffee.
