Workgroup / Wireless Network Problem

Hi!

I recently upgraded to XP Pro (from XP Home) on both my
home desktop and home/office laptop. I am using a
Linksys 802.11b/g router with a cable modem. I am using
WEP for security.

Since the upgrade, I have been able to share the
internet, but for some reason, my laptop cannot access
the Workgroup (on both PCs the workgroup name is the
same: Home). The desktop recongizes a workgroup member
(ie: the laptop), but not vice versa. In fact, the
laptop cannot view any of the network resources and XP
says to talk to my administrator. Well, that is me on
both PCs!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Almost same problem. XP pro on desktop and laptop.
Successfully using LAN with old hub with only ethernet.

Now have ethernet and wireless needs. Hoping to replace
old ethernet hub with with a LINKSYS WRT54G ver 2
broadband router. Tried wireless -- gave up. Using only
the ethernet ports (ignoring wireless)I can not get peer
to peer file or print sharing to work.

Any ideas?

One nice step is to put aside name resolution, and do all
your testing with IP numbers. If everything works with
IP numbers, but not with machine names, then you can start
troubleshooting a name resolution problem (ie, NetBIOS
name resolution--via broadcast, or WINS, or whatever you're
using).

BTW, I'm assuming you're using TCP/IP. If you're actually
using NetBEUI (which I think XP lacks), or IPX, then it is
a whole different ballpark.

If you have possible connectivity issues (ie, can't
connect with IP numbers), then check your WEP & SSID
settings, check any IPSEC policies (if you have any),
check that you have compatible IP numbers (ie, check
the netmasks).

Best of luck.
