Bob

I recently installed Win XP Pro on all my computers. Is
my understand right in that I can not have a domain
network setup unless I have Win 2000 server running on one
of my computers? I was able to have a domain network
running Win 98 in server mode. There does not seem to be
as much control with permissions controlling workgroups as
there was with a domain network. If there is a way to
setup domains with Win XP then how? If not where can I
find out all there is to know about permissions with
workgroups?

Thanks

Hi Bob,

Domains have only ever been creatable in the server flavors of Windows
NT/2000/2003.

It sounds as though you had the file sharing type in Windows 98 to be as if
you were attached to a domain. If you would like more granular control over
shares, in Windows Explorer, go to Tools | Options and click the View tab,
and at the bottom disable Simple File Sharing.

Now when you look at a folder's properties you can go to the Security tab
and control permissions for users and groups.
