How do I manage workgroup security?

I am already familiar with assigning right to various
documents and/or folders. I instead would like to know
about managing the security of various PCs on our network
workgroup.

For example, when I double click (my network place) and
select (View workgroup computers) I can see all the
computers on my workgroup network.

The security I am asking about is when a person accesses
a computer on the network can he/she be prompted to enter
a username & a password (or maybe only password). Is that
possible?

Thanks a lot of your help

P.S.: I read this website, and it didn't helped me

Could you please direct me to some other websites or
simply provide the answer.

yes, make sure you disable simple file sharing and guest account. and then
setup permission to protect your files.

I am having the same problem as well. Even after
disabling file sharing and guest account, i can't change
share permissions. Everytime I try to add a new share, it
does not allow me to add other users on other networked
computers. When I click the Locations button, I can only
search my local computer. How do I see the other
networked computers there?

do you logon as administrator?

That web page describes how to control access to shared disks and
folders on a Windows XP Professional computer after disabling simple
file sharing.

If you have Windows XP Home Edition, or if you have Windows XP
Professional and haven't disabled simple file sharing, assign a
password to the "Guest" account. When other people try to access
your computer, they'll be prompted to enter the password:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK.
c. Under "Users for this computer", click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password, enter a password, and click OK.
