Hi,
Recently I put together a system for someone with the following
specification:
k7s6a mobo
2200XP cpu
512MB memory
40gb wd hd
Geforce 4 440
Along with a cdrom & cd writer
With this setup I installed Windows XP as the OS (probably not
significant)
This setup worked fine for hours, ie, when I had it at my house. When
I gave it over to the person whom I was building it for he claimed it
wouldn't turn on. So I told him to bring it back, which he did, and
sure enough the system is totally dead, when I press the power button
the fans spin for a second or two then the system just sits there.
I've done the usual.. testing memory, checking for loose cables,
resetting the cmos jumper & unplugging everything unnecessary for
starting the pc, hdd's, fdd's, cdrom's leaving it with just the
memory, cpu & graphics card plugged in. What I haven't done yet is
test the PSU & the CPU which I am going to do tonight with my own
system as it is an identical setup to this. My thinking is that it is
either a faulty motherboard of faulty cpu in with case I'll rma the
culprit.
I'd appreciate if you could tell me if there is anything that I have
overlooked

Thanks in advance,

Hi Paul,

I've had this a few times on new systems and every time it has been
either the Graphics card or memory had come loose or was not seated
properly.
What tends to happen is, because the motherboard and back panel of the
case are not always square to each other, when you tighten the retaining
screw for the Graphics card or any PCI card there is a tendency for the
back end of the card to pull out of the slot.
If you look at the Gold edge fingers on the cards you will see there is
not a lot of room for error and it doesn't take a lot of movement to
cause a cross connection which is unlikely to cause any damage but will
stop the system from working.
I would suggest removing and re-installing all the cards and tightening
the backplate fixing screws just enough to hold them in place.
