Its my bests mates wedding at weekend and there is no annual leave available at work. I don't know what to do. I don't want to call in sick but I can't miss my mate's wedding. I've grown up with the guy since we were kids.

See if you can work overtime to make up for it or perhaps ask for unpaid leave. If you're working for a sizable company they might be quite flexible :) Is the wedding not on a weekend I guess?

The Planning team is difficult to negotiate with. I've tried. I even said I'll cover shifts...anything to have it off....

My manager said if he could, he would....

mmm looks like you will have no choice but to call in sick

i dont know your line of work
but can you not get someone to cover for you then you can do their shift on another day?

no

im thinking of calling in & saying my pipes burst and have 2 stay at home as there is an emergency...

will that wash?

well it don't matter now really because you told them before hand
they will know it's a pack of lies.

I don't think they can sack you for doing what you are going to do. But come up with a better excuse at least mate!

I'm sure we could all put our thinking caps on for you.
:)

You all went out on the stag night and got so out of it that your mates made a mistake and it was you that ended up naked staked out on a beach in the Outer Hebredies .

For proof get someone to send a postcard from the Outer Hebredies in your handwritting saying " I Know you won't belive this but, "

Hmmmm Bit dodgy this one..You have already told your manager in advance of why you want that specific date off so if you call in sick they will know and could possibly sack you for gross misconduct...

Its not unreasonable to ask for a day off for your best friends wedding, so your boss is being just a little finnicky in turning you down for some time off..

Best thing to do would be to explain to your boss tomorrow that you will be taking the day off to attend the wedding and that its not unreasonable to be able to take one day off as it is the weekend...Hope he sees sense and comes round and lets you have the day off..

Can a work colleague help and cover for you for the day and you cover for them another time..

If he still doesn't agree then its up to you whether you go ahead and risk a warning or the sack on Monday morning, but at least you haven't lied and have been straight with them from the start..

Failing that you go to work on the weekend and miss your friends wedding and keep your job..

Tell your work to go and get stuffed.

Go to your best mate's wedding.

Worry about it later.

This has been flops' advice.

One day, probably about thirty years later, you'll realise I was right :)

Maybe in thirty years he may do flopp's..

But its now he's gotta worry about whilst he's sleeping on a bench in the local park after losing his job and failing to pay his mortgage...:D

The bad thing was you told him about it in advanced, i am happily calling in sick for saturday to go to a party hehe

Depends mate. How old are you, is this your 'proper' job etc?

I know what i'd be doing. Get them told that you won't be in and they better cover you. If you call in sick now they'll know it's a lie and going back on Monday will be a bit worrying.

You can't miss your mates wedding, you'll regret if forever if you do!!

Get to the wedding, and don't worry about work!! :-)

I think i should clarify something.

I haven't actually told anyone other than my manager about wanting time off. I got him to check and she said it was unavailable.

So they won't remember me asking.

So i just need to come up with a good excuse...

I thought pipes bursting..home at risk of flooding...need 2 wait for engineer is good one?

Well what the hell are you waiting for then...Get to the church on time, but no Shotguns please...:D

Oh and don't forget to phone in to work in the morning...

Go to work as normal, but take a baby (yours, his, a friends) and say its really a shame i couldnt go to the wedding but can little Norman or Norma stay with me coz i was supposed to babysit for them in the day whilst they got ready ??

Worth a try..

If you worked for me , it would be fine..? who do you work for and what do you do and what are your hours..please hide obvious company names so not as to get free advertisement :)

hahah

or you could say as a result of the stag do you got locked up in the back of a van, got tied up and transported somewhere overnight.

Suggest you have just woken up.
Then suggest that you are ringing from a payphone you have just realised that you are in the Scottish Highlands and have got no chance of coming to work, because you have not got any clothes on, you are too far and will need a helicopter to get to work .

Then get your mate the one that got married to have a little word with them.

Course this all depends on your location!

I always think a 'sprained ankle' is a good one. It's better than the headache or sore stomach. Just say you went over on your ankle and you can't walk.

I called in for saturday as i wanted to go to a party, i think i put on quite a good voice acting for a headache and cold lol
