When I access web pages words with an (') apostrophe are displayed wrong.
they are displayed as can?t or nation?s rather than can't or nation's. Any
help is appreciated. This problem began a month or so back. Using IE6.0 in
Windows XP:updated version SP2.

This can happen if people use something like Word to compose their message
and paste it into OE, which does not support Word's "smart quotes".

This is most likely an error on the part of the web page creator. If
Microsoft's non-standard coding for the typographic or "curly" apostrophes
and quotes is used and the character set is not properly identified,
you're likely to see question marks instead. Could you post an example of
a page where you see this?

MSN money home page has an article titled: How to lock in your home profits.
The first sentence in that article is: Are you sitting on a pile of equity
and nervous about your area?s housing market?

The teaser on the home page (http://moneycentral.msn.com/home.asp) says,
"Are you sitting on a pile of equity and nervous about your area's
housing market?" I see an apostrophe there where you're seeing a question
mark. The character is Unicode 2019, RIGHT SINGLE QUOTATION MARK. The
page appears to be coded correctly, and since I'm seeing it okay, the
problem may lie in your settings. In IE, when you go to View > Encoding,
what option is selected? Mine says "Western European (Windows)".

Mine is Unicode(utf-8). I changed it to Western European (windows) and the ?
changed to the apostrophe but when I closed IE and then opened it again it
Unicode(utf-8) had returned automatically. I tried a few more times and
restarted the computer and tried again. Now the money page remain as it
should but msn.com and other pages keep returning to Unicode when I close IE
and reopen it. any more suggestions?
I really appreciate the advice. Thank YOU.

We've identified the problem, but unfortunately I don't know why the
character encoding option keeps changing. The fact that the page itself
has changed and no longer displays the text we're discussing makes it even
more difficult. Maybe someone else will have a clue.

View-Encoding
Is Auto-Select selected?

I forgot to mention I had tried auto select which did move it to Western E
(W) but again when I closed IE and opened IE again it had changed back to
Unicode. :-(

For me, the Msnhome page (and many of their pages) uses Unicode(utf-8), the
MsnMoney uses Western European (windows) I don't know why yours did not
switch before. I have never changed any settings.

Oddly at msn home when I select Western European (windows) the S becomes ' as
it should but when I close and restart IE it reverts to Unicode and the '
becomes S again. and yes the msn money remains WE (windows). Just wish the
S would go away and be an '. thanks much
