Is there a wordprocessor available that can save files in .doc format ? I
tried Atlantis Nova and Crypt Edit, but they didn't seem able to do this.
Open Office can probably do this, but I have no need for a full office
package.
TIA Rod

OpenOffice can do that (www.openoffice.org)

But for a smaller install, abiword (http://www.abisource.com/) can do it
too.
Both apps are quite good at writing to .doc files, but each have been
reported to write an occasionally bad document. (fortunately, I never had
that experience)

Also Write.exe (comes with your PC) can also read and write *.doc files
(Word 6 format) For most People, it can handle everything they will ever
need in a wordprocessor)

Thanks Le Loup and Mightykitten, I'll check out Abiword. For some reason
Write.exe crashes a lot on my win98SE system. Thanks again.

You can just install the Writer part of Oo.

That sounds interesting, you mean if I download OO the in install gives me
the option to just install the part I want ?

AbiWord has already been mentioned, but you might find that your
existing WordPad might be of immediate use.

Thanks for the input, I tried both Abiword and the Open Office Writer, I'm
sticking with Abiword. Thank you all for replying.

A warning is appropriate... I have tried Abiword on several
occasions, but it is very buggy. You will probably find that
Word cannot open a file you created or edited with Abiword. I
have now switched to Atlantis, which is just amazing.

Thanks for the warning, so far no buggyness here.
Unfortunetly the freeware version of Atlantis, Atlantis Nova, doesn't
support saving documents as .DOC. The shareware version, Atlantis Ocean
Mind, does support this, but..., well...er.., it's shareware.

But - eh - it's not crippled...

Thanks John, I'll check out Cletus as Abiword bit me twice
last night.

I think Abiword looks really nice and wish it well, but cannot
believe that version 2 is still crippled by alpha bugs, such as
saving files that Word can't read. :-(

I have reported a host of bugs over the years... and tend to get
a comment back about a year later.

I fear that - despite its looks - Abiword is NOT the best
example of open source...

Same as you I graduated from WordPad to CWordPad and then to CryptEdit
and they stay there :-)

CryptEdit does save as .doc file and for this you have to download and
install conpack.exe from the authors site.

When you try to save a new file it will always suggest .rtf but you
can choose to save in the .doc format. You can also read and edit Word
97 files and lower.

I think as of today this is the best software to handle .doc software
with the smallest footprint and most features.

Hold on to CryptEdit.

And while getting Convpack.exe get also spellset.exe that will give
spell checking ability.
