I have composed my resume in the WordPerfect 10 program
that came with my Dell computer. I have received
multiple replies that the recipients cannot open the
attachment. How can I change this so they will be able
to view my resume?
They probably are setup on MS-Office (Word for word-processing). No point in
telling them to install the converters. You might contact them and ask what
file type they prefer. The reality is that MS-Office is the major corporate
wordprocessing player.
Most universal form of document is a text file as created by Notepad but you
won't have any of the formatting features.
I would open the document in WordPerfect and see if you can save it as a
MS-Word file. My WordPerfect Office 2000 (WordPerfect 9) allows me to save
the document as a Word 6,7,97,2000. My WordPerfect 11 allows 2002 as well as
the others. You may have to go back and install the converters if they
aren't there. An alternative is to use WordPad which uses a format close to
MS-Word and Word should be able to open it. Another alternative is to save
it as a .rtf file which Word can open. The conversion from WordPerfect
should be fairly good since WordPerfect realized that MS was the major
player and they had better make their files compatible.
Since you are trying to make an impression test your method first and make
sure it works so the recipient doesn't get a jumbled mess. To avoid this
problem keep your resume format as simple as possible. The fancier the
feature the less likely it will convert properly. Avoid columns and bullets
and keep the number of fonts to a minimum. Don't use automatic
numbering/lettering for sections; if you want section numbers put them in
yourself as text. You want a document that tells them why they should hire
you. Busy people are not amused by clever fonts, graphics and a lot of junk
that gets in the way of making an assessment of your job-related abilities.
