I have a problem with WordPad Application, the problem is that I can't open
any text file with .txt extension or .tsv that is larger than 300-400 kb ,it
would cause the wordpad to hangup ,I thought it was my Windows version,I
tried it on other PC's but still face the same problem ,I have windows xp
professional SP2,please if any one can help with this ,I checked for a
solution in the intenet but got no result.
thank you for your cooperation

What happens if you try opening the files in notepad or any text editor
other than wordpad? Smaller files work okay in Wordpad?

it is opened in notpad with no trouble and but i need to open it in wordpad,
i know that worpad can open uo to 16mb ,but I dont know what is happening , i
tried this on different with windows XP professional ,window server 2003, and

know what to do
,I really appreciate any help ,because i need this issue urgently

File size is not the problem. SP2 made some changes to how RTF and DOC
files were handled - since these are TXT and TSV files, the changes do not
apply.

Is there a default printer designated? If no, Wordpad can run into trouble
trying to display the contents of some files. If no physical printer is
installed, install the "generic text" printer. Here's a link to an article
that contains step by step directions:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310307/en-us

TSV and similar formats are normally created by exporting from an
application. To display, they are imported into the same (or a similar)
application. They're usually much easier to read when displayed in their
native surroundings compared to how they look in a text editor or word
processor.

Some info on TSV files:
http://www.cs.tut.fi/~jkorpela/TSV.html

If you are still concerned about the state of wordpad.exe, you might want
to download and apply the following security update which replaced
wordpad.exe with an updated version:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885836/en-us

The only other reason that I can think of that you would have problems with
these files is that they were created by third party applications and have
something special about them that Wordpad has trouble dealing with. You
might have to use the source program to really work with these files
instead of using Wordpad.

A workaround that might help... Open the files in Notepad. Select All. Then
copy and paste into a blank Wordpad file. A bit klutzy but may get you
through working with these files.

Dear Sharon F,

I appreciate your will to help me, taking time to write to someone to help
is someething i value very much,I tried what you suggested, I downloaded the
hotfix but nothing chnaged ,I aslo treid to copy the contents from notepad
and paste into anew blank wordpad but also nothing changed ,I aslo opened a
new wordpad file and write rubbish till the file became about 2 mb and closed
it and reopen it again, nothing changed ,I think it may be something with
registry, the problem is that it happens on every PC i tried ,may be even in
your PC ,I don't know ,again thank you very much for your effort and time and
if you have any more suggestions I would appreciate it.

I'm happy to try and help. Even happier if we get the problem fixed. I have
a desktop PC and a tablet PC; both have SP2 and all critical updates from
Microsoft installed. I opened a large plain text file in Wordpad - about
750 kb - and it opened almost instantaneously.

I'm assuming that your Wordpad problems are limited to text files only. In
other words Wordpad is working with other files - RTF, for example. If that
is not the case, now would be a good time to mention other Wordpad problems
that you are experiencing.

Running low on suggestions but a few left:
Open Wordpad. Under View, click on Options and select the "text" tab. If
not already selectd, choose "no wrap." OK the change and try opening one of
those text files again.

MVP Kelly Theriot has a "restore wordpad.exe" fix on her website that you
could try. It is on line 308, left hand side of this page:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

I'm hoping that this fix checks registry entries for Wordpad as well as
replacing the .exe file. Since Kelly's interests are centered on the
registry -there's a chance it will do just that. If it does not, you'll end
up where you started and no worse. Or you could drop her an email and ask
her what the fix addresses before trying it.

Dear Sharon F,
I really appreciate your help ,you are so kind, actually I tried what you
suggested but oops nothing ,im a vb.net developer and I need to open and read
text files from my applicatiions ,as I said in my previous letter ,I already
opened a new blank wordpad and wrote some text till it became about 1mb and I
wasn't able to open it again,I use in my application a command that relies on
reading text files as a stream of characters but since wordpad can't open
them,my application can't open them too,any way you did all what you can do
and I thank you very much for your effort and time ,please accept my very
best regards.

I noticed in another thread that you mentioned vb.net. Have you considered
trying one of the many third party text editors that are free? Both wordpad
and notepad are very basic. I would think something like UltraEdit, Notepad
+, NoteTab or EditPad (just to name a few) would be very useful to you.
Some of these support colored text (useful for keeping track of code nested
in code) and line numbers.

Below are links to reviews for some of the programs I mentioned. These
pages also contain links to the home page for each program.

Dear Sharon F

Thnak you very much,it worked and I couldn't believe it ,I downloaded the
programmer's notpad and it even opend 3mb .tsv file in almost a second ,I
wonder what makes this program so better than wordpad, I also wonder if you

You're very welcome and I'm glad to hear that you found something that will
work for you and your vb.net developing.

As for why this program would work better than Wordpad, I can only repeat
the fact that Notepad and Wordpad are *very basic* programs. Although
they've been mildly tweaked here and there through the years, they exist as
simple convenience items. Something like Programmer's Notepad has been
developed towards a specific purpose - beefed up, polished and very useful.

I don't know about importing the .DLL. Sorry. My focus in the Windows arena
is more on usability and interface than programming. But... if you follow
some of the developer and source code links for the program, you may catch
up with someone (or some printed information) that would answer that
question.

You're welcome again! I appreciate your offer of friendship very much
although I prefer to keep all discussions about the XP shell here in the
microsoft.public.windowsxp.* newsgroups.

The magic of newsgroups: Many ideas from many people in one location
creates a huge depository of information that can help many computer users.

Best of luck to you with your programming,
