I have learned how to start a footnote in word
ctrl alt d
insert the number and the start point for the note.

How do I stop the note?
My notes go on and on ...

Which version of Word do you have? In Word 2002 for example,
if you look at the top of the window that contains your notes, you
will see a button marked 'close.' Try clicking on that.
