When using word, I would highlight a segment and press the "backspace" button
but it won't delete. How do I correct this problem?
 
For issues relating to Microsoft Word, try the following newsgroup:
microsoft.public.word

Have you tried running Detect and Repair, does this occurr everytime you use
Word? Which version of Word is this by the way? Have you installed the
Service Packs and patches? Is this happening on Windows Vista or a prior
version of Windows, which version?
