How do I get Word to assign, as the suggested file name,
the first few words of the document?

It used to do this, but recently it has started to assign
my initals. I guess that I must have changed some
setting, but cannot find which one.

My wife, using the same computer, but logged on as
another user (under WinXP) still gets the first few words
as the default file name.

If the Title property is empty, Word will seize the first text in the
document (up to the first punctuation mark or paragraph break). Check to
make sure you don't have your initials in the Title property for Normal.dot.

Well, it would have been simpler to open Normal.dot and change its
properties. <g>

I did this. I deleted the text in the name field of the
properties sheet of normal.dot. (Word was not running
when I did this.) But each time, after I re-started
Word, the text mysteriously re-appeared in the name
field. I even tried changing the normal.dor templet
properties after re-booting the computer, to ensure that
some remnant of Word was not running in the background.
Strange, eh?

You can't open Normal.dot for editing without opening Word. Try again.

Once you know how, it's easy: just open the template in
Word, and use File/properties to edit the Title.

I hadn't thought of editing the properties sheet this
way! Was doing a right-click in Explorer.

Thanks again, Suzanne.

Right. It wouldn't have occurred to me to try to edit the Properties using
Explorer. <g>
