Word Viewer not recognised

I want to make Word Viewer 2003 the default application for .doc files
on my W2K laptop, but something isn't quite right.

Word Viewer 2003 appears to install properly and is listed alright under
"Add/Remove Programs" and I see the Word Viewer icon for doc files in
Windows Explorer, but for some mysterious reason Word Viewer is not
listed under "Open With", and when I select Wordview.exe via "Other" in
the "Open With" window the selection doesn't 'stick', i.e. next time I
double-click on a doc file I get a "Program Not Found" window :-(

It works perfectly well on my W2K PC, and I have no idea why it doesn't
work on the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Some further information on this problem:

I already uninstalled Word Viewer 97 a couple of days ago, and yesterday
I uninstalled and re-installed Word Viewer 2003, but the problem persists.

A manual search in the registry reveals at least one reference to Word
Viewer 97, so this may be the problem, but I am somewhat reluctant to
modify the registry manually without being sure what I'm doing.

I just ran the registry inconsistency utility that comes with Spybot
Search & Destroy and it did indeed find quite a few inconsistencies but
none relating to Word Viewer.

Is there another registry utility I could try?

Any other suggestions?
