If you can open the Word file, CutePDF Printer can convert to PDF:

If you can't open the Word file, try Word Viewer:

You can open a doc file in OpenOffice.org (http://www.openoffice.org/) and
then directly do a pdf file.

PDFCreator does the same job as PDF995, but is true freeware:

Oddly enough, it is recommended for Window 95, 98 and 2000 only. I wonder
why the programmer doesn't recommend it for ME and XP?

When was the program written? Could be that it preceded the release of
ME/XP.

Slight bit of nagware, but otherwise free and seems to work well.
Also works with other programs, including graphic programs.

I used to use PDF995, but CutePDF works the same way, without the nag pop-up
(and the possibility that the freeware purists will jump on your posts about
it :~) ):
