word to frontpage trick?

C

chris leeds

everyone complains about pasting word docs into FrontPage.

I just did it myself and in code view did a find and replace to "fix" it.

find: class="MsoNormal">
replace with: >

it took all the junk out of the <p> tags. ;-)

It's not the only way but it worked really quick. ;-)

I find I can usually whack most of the word formatting by highlighting the
pasted text and selecting "Format | Remove Formatting." Occassionally, I'll
get some bits that won't respond to that command, so I end up removing them
manually. Don't forget to yank the MSO style declaration that's added in
the head of the document, too.

Pasting through Notepad probably takes less time, though. :)

C

chris leeds

notepad is a little easier but with the find and replace thing it's about as
quick plus you don't lose the paragraph, line breaks, and other simple
mark-up.

I do use the format/ remove formatting on a lot of things though.
there's an excellent vb macro that jim buyens included in his book MS
FrontPage Inside Out.

I keep a little text file on my desktop called unformat.txt.
When someone sends me a Word document, I open it in Word, I select
everything I want from it and copy into the clipboard.

Then I open unformat.txt with notepad and paste into that. Then select all,
copy and paste into FP.

Works with other programs, too.

I've got an MS keyboard with extra app buttons on it. I've mapped the "My
Computer" button to launch Notepad. I use that all the time for copy paste
operations, or taking notes during a phone call, etc.

You Sir, should try notetab from www.fookes.com. ;-)

It's a great plain text editor with lots of features including a clip
library, and a spell checker. calling it a text editor is a little bit of
an understatement.

C

chris leeds

I've got that too and it's very good. still, the clip libraries are pretty
nice in note tab. IMHO
I'm hoping to use fp code snippets in place of the panel in note tab but
it's a lot less "visual" and "organized" than the GUI for them in notetab.
it's a hell of a lot of program for $20. good support and nice folks too.

Chris, ... what a cool little notepad, even the free version is chock full o'stuff...it even handshakes with Top Style Lite.

Thanks,

it really is killer. I'm hoping to get some free time and contribute some
clip libraries to them. I had a problem and they were stand-up about it.
I'd like to be able to "give back".
take a look on their site for some extra clip texts, there's even one for
"overlib" a real cool layer type pop-up.

I just drag the Word file from Windows Explorer onto a page in FP. It works
fine. I don't have to remove any formatting, and I don't get those little
extra tags. Contrary to popular belief, you don't get extra coding when you
do this.

Only from older version of MS W (like 97)
- in newer version you will

I'm using Word 2000. My site is www.dipika.org. All of the articles were
edited in Word 2000 and dragged in from Windows Explorer. Feel free to check
it out. If I'm getting extra coding, I would like to know about it. All I
can find is the normal para breaks, italics, bold, and the like.

No Wally is correct. It imports the formatting but doesn't carry accross any
XML.
Nice tip.
So why did they hide this away? At the very least it would have been nice to
have this function on the paste special menu.

I went camping and borrowed a circus tent by mistake. I didn't notice
until I got it set up. People complained because they couldn't see the
lake.

Holy cow that's easy.

I'll probably make use of that one all the time. Thanks, Wally.

THANKS

I was just getting a long word file onto a page when I read this. I tried your method it and IT WORKS
There was still a little code left over for bookmarks, pages, indents, but that did not create a major problem and stil
saved me a ton of work.

S

Stefan B Rusynko

The reason it works is because FP is using Convert to RTF
- same process as at http://sbrenjoy.bizland.com/frontpage/word.htm (w/ less steps & less control)

How could anything be simpler than just dragging the file onto the page? And
all your text formatting stays intact. AND it should be "fewer steps" not
"less steps."
