I was typing a word document and the top half of the document has changed
into lines of little small boxes and different characters. How do I change it
back into readable text again.

Check the font for the text which contains your lines and small boxes.
I would hazard a guess that the font is now a Wingdings or some other
character font. Select the offending text and convert the font back
to what you are typing.

Let us know if this does not solve your situation.

Yes this happened to me! Help!

I was writing my masters dissertation, in Windows 2010 for Mac [compatibility mode] and I don't know what happened. I didn't change anything, but all of a sudden all the text minus parts of one line changed into rows of tiny boxes. ALL THE TEXT!!! This made Word crash. I reopened Word and tried to open another document. It was fine.
I tried to reopen the offending document, and while still in boxes, Word crashed again, before I could do anything like change the font. This happened several times.

I even tried opening the document in text edit, where there were no boxes, but only that segmented one line of text. I also emailed the document to myself and tried opening it on another computer to no avail.

Is there anything I can do??? I am at a complete and utter loss!
Thank you
