Word slow to open...

I have several files that will take up to 5 minutes to open. When they finally do open everything works fine.. The file are all between 20 and 30 k. The kicker here is that if I disable my network connection they open right up. anyone have any ideas how I can make these guys open right up with having to lose my connection?
 
Is the document template on the network? Does it help if you attach a
template on the local machine (make sure that "Automatically update document
styles" is not checked)?
