Use XP and IE6.0. When I open word 2003 it takes an inordinate amount of time
to load and open. I find that there is a virus scan that runs every time I
open word and due to amount of material I have stored itdelays word opening
promptly. Is there a way to turn off this scan?? TYIA

I just contacted my psychic advisor, and even she can't guess what antivirus
program you have. Do you suppose you could consult the program's Help file
to get that information?

And also Telephomics should tell us how long "an inordinate amount of time"
is.

Further, what do you mean by "amount of material I have stored"? What
material? Where is it stored?

I'm not the OP, but I'll piggyback with a more pointed question.(*)

I've noticed that "virus scan" when I open Word on no document (/n
option on Winword.exe) -- is Word actually calling on AVG to get it
to scan some files?

Which files? The scan takes just seven seconds, but even that seems a
lot for the _one_ file in my startup directory, which is only 43 KB.

(*)I have Grisoft AVG Free, Word 2003, Win XP Pro SP2.
System: 1.8 GHz, 1 GB RAM, few to zero other progs running

I have about 50 long documents stored in Word

Are you suggested that every time you open one word document, all 50 are
scanned by your anti-virus progranm?

No, that's not what happens.

-time factor 15-20seconds

15-20 is on the long side, but it doesn't sound anywhere near as long as "an
inordinate amount of time." Depending on how fast your computer is, what
anti-virus program you you use and just big the document you're opening is,
it may not even be particularly unusual.

What happens if you create one very small document and open that? How long
does it take then?

I have no problem writing messages and saving them. The documents I have
saved in word run 5-10,000 words in length. When I open word is where I find
the time delay and in the lower left corner of the monitor screen a message
appears whicj says-running a virus scan" My question is--how to I stop
running this scan. I see no point in having it run every time I open word. If
I have not saved anything new I assume my library of stored material is clean.

What I said was that the delay is encountered when I first open the program
word 2003. I did not say when I open a message. TIA
