word slow to open when outlook runnung

if i open a word 2000 .doc with outlook running in background it takes over 7 seconds to open. if outlook is not running it takes less then 1 second to open the same .doc. i have tried this several times with outlook running or not, and always the same results. no other program that i use causes this slowdown just outlook. is this normal or is there a fix

i am running windows xp pro and office 2000
 
Sounds like you have Outlook's Word journalling function switched on. Start
Outlook, go to Tools > Options : Preferences, and click the 'Journal
Options' button.
