Hi,

Is there anyone who can solve the following problem?

I save many of my Word documents on the (Windows) desktop. When I
double-click one of these shortcuts, the document opens in Word.

The other day I did something wrong, I don't know what, but the icons
of the Word shortcuts took on a different shape and colour. I tried to
sort this out, but failed. In the end I selected a Word shortcut, held
down Shift and right-clicked it. I then chose Open with and selected
WinWord in the Open with box. I also ticked the check box Always use
this program .….. The Word shortcut looks all right again, but when I
now click a Word shortcut on the desktop Word opens without displaying
the document.

My question is: how can I get the Word shortcuts back to normal, so
that the document will be opened in Word?

Thanks,

Jason

Reregister Word in Windows. Use Start, Run and type in

winword /r

and press enter. This will reregister Word.

BTW, saving documents to the Desktop is VERY VERY dodgy. The Desktop is not
a safe environment. Always save to the HDD.

Have you tried this? Open MY COMPUTER --> go to TOOLS --> FOLDER OPTIONS.
Now select the FILE TYPE tab.

Now scroll this list and be sure that DOC file types are opened with Word
(you might also check TXT and RTF... if in fact you wish Word to open those
file types as well.)

If DOC already says it opens with Word -- we'll have to wait for a wiser
Word guru!

Good Luck.

Hi Kate G. and TF,

Thanks very much for your responses to my question.

Kate G. made me discover that Word was opened with iexplorer, which I
have changed subsequently - but Word still refused to display a
document - and TF's tip did the trick. After reregistering Word, the
icon is back to normal and I can open the documents in Word again.
Great!!

I didn't know the desktop is not a safe environment. I have been
saving documents as icons on the desktop since 1996, and I have never
had any problems. Thanks for that tip too! Although, I never keep them
long on the desktop, usually they are articles that I copied from
newspapers on the internet, saved on the desktop, read them the same
or next day, and then deleted them. But I do have a few icons on the
desktop from two years ago, and they're still fine.

Thanks again.
