Please can you help.

I'm not sure if this is an XP issue or a Word issue
(Office 2000)
As you probably gather I'm a bit of a novice. When I try
to launch "Word" or open a document in word in takes ages
I notice in the status bar "requesting virus scan" I
assume this is why everything is so slow. I have word
installed on two other networked PC's running ME with no
problems. I'm running Norton anti virus software

Its part of Norton AntiVirus, it can be enabled or disabled, disabling it
may speed up opening your documents
click on the below link to find out how to disable it

John,

There seems to be an issue with the recent LiveUpdate with Norton Anti-virus. Check out their documenation here:

After updating to the January 7th or 8th virus definitions, computer slows down and Microsoft Word and Excel will not start: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2004010810205113
