I need to use variable size text boxes to allow users to
enter relevant data. The tab does not move from the form
field boxes to the text boxes and the resizing of the text
boxes doesn't shift the following data down, but simply
grows and covers the next subject.

any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Pauline,

When a form is protected, the only places people can type are within the
form's fields. Consider using frames rather than text boxes.

I'm not sure I understand what it is you want to achieve. You want to have
people type information in a form. You want the space available to be
variable to fit what they type.

How much information will be typed in a single field? Formfields expand to
fit data by default.

What is the purpose of the textboxes? You can insert formfields directly in
the regular text of a document.

Which version of Word are you using?

Hi Charles,

Thank you for your response I have used the properties on
the form fields to try and resize with the amount of data
that is input on the field, but when a user is entering
data it expands right off the page. I have tried to set
the multi-line but then it gives a vertical column of data
only 1 character across.

I tried the frames and this works until you protect the
form and it doesn't allow the user to tab from the form
fields to the frames. Can I send you a copy of my
document to look at?

The information on the second sheet of the form will be
free text entered by the user and can be anything from one
sentance to half a page. There are 7 such subjects where
the users are required to enter this kind of data. So the
entry boxes need to autosize and shift the following
subjects further down the page or onto the next page if
necessary.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Pauline

There are two possible approaches here. One is to allow users to enter their
freeform text in an unprotected section. Insert a Next Page section break
below the form fields on the first page (or a Continuous break below
whatever questions/instructions you have on the second page) and then
protect just Section 1 for forms. Users will be able to apply many types of
formatting (bold, italics, paragraph formatting) but not, I think, bullets
or numbering, and they won't have access to spell checking unless you enable
it with a macro such as that offered at
http://www.mvps.org/word/FAQs/MacrosVBA/SpellcheckProtectDoc.htm

Alternatively, just insert a text form field on the second page. Don't put
it in a text box; this is not necessary. An ordinary form field will expand
to allow users to type as much as they want. Some formatting features will
be unavailable in a form field, however.
