Do other files take long also? Try going into the control
panel/Internet Options and deleting all your temp. files.
This is a common glitch with XP that requires this action
often.

look down at the bottom when word opens. Does it say
requesting virus scan? This can sometime cause docs to
open slow. I beleive that is a setting in your virus
software.
