We have just recently purchased a new Dell computer which
has Windows XP. Our question is does Word Pad have a
spell check function. If so, how do we access this
function?

No. Wordpad is not really a word processor; it's just a glorified
text editor.

If you need word processing capabilities, you need to buy a word
processing product.
