Dear Newsgroup:

I purchased a Dell last year which came with Microsoft
Word installed and with the software CD (Office XP).
Recently I purchased an IBM Thinkpad laptop and installed
Office XP on that system so that I can use Word
interchangeably between the two computers. I got a
limited trial of 50 uses, however.

Is there something I must do to install the already
purhased rights of use to that software onto my laptop?
I'd hate to do it, but I may have to install Word 98 on
both my computers so that I can use Word
interchangeably. Is that my only option?

Thank you in advance for your response.

When you install Office XP on a computer, you must
activate it. You should be prompted to do this
automatically, but if you're not, you can choose Activate
Product on the Help menu. Unless you have done this, Word
will degrade into Reduced Functionality Mode after 50 uses.

It's not clear from your message whether you bought a new
copy of Office XP for your laptop, but I'm afraid this is
what you will have to do. Unlike the retail version of
Office XP, which can be installed on two machines, a
desktop and a laptop (provided they're never used
simultaneously), an OEM version (which is what you have,
since it came installed on your Dell) is licensed only for
the machine it is purchased with. If you had the option to
get Office XP OEM on the ThinkPad as well, this is what
you should have done.

BTW, Word 98 is a Mac version, so I doubt that that would
be an option for your Dell and ThinkPad.

Hi Nilima,

You should read the terms of the End User Licence Agreement (EULA) for the
OEM version of the software that came with your Dell computer. I think you
will find that it is only valid for use on the computer with which it was
supplied.

You should be able to view the EULA by selecting About Microsoft Word from
the Help menu and click on the link.

Please post any further questions or followup to the newsgroups for the
benefit of others who may be interested. Unsolicited questions forwarded
directly to me will only be answered on a paid consulting basis.

Hope this helps

That is the case. I note that some OEM software is now BIOS locked so that
you can only install it on that range of computers (e.g. HP/Compaq EVOs
only).

Doug,

Thank you very much for your response to my question. I
don't agree with that policy, that the software is
allowed per computer, but I'm not in a position at this
moment to change it.

Thanks, again.
